Ok last night as I watched Robyn leave for work, I glanced up into the somewhat clear sky and noticed the moon was full and bright. There were clouds around it too but I have yet to figure out how to post-process a bright object such as a full moon and clouds into one shot. I would assume I would have to take multiple exposures and layer them on top or something.

Full Moon

The above shot was taken at 300mm and then cropped. Some post-processing was done with Adobe Lightroom 2.2 to bring out a bit more detail in the craters.

I went by my cousin Brennan’s suggestion about shooting the moon but since I have a Canon XSi, I think the general rule of thumb was geared more towards full-frame cameras. I had to lower the shutter speed from 1/100 to about 1/50 at F13 or so with an ISO 100.

I tried to even take an HDR shot of the moon but that didn’t turn out so nice. I couldn’t use Av mode which I would normally used for HDR as the camera wanted to take 30sec exposures. Since the moon is half the brightness of the sun, I didn’t think that would be a good thing for the camera’s sensor to deal with.

Did you get to to see the full Moon last night before it ducked behing the clouds?

    Hey Tyler,

Nice shot! I have the Canon Rebel XT with the standard lens.

I missed a lifetime shot while driving down to Affiliate Summit West 2009 in Las Vegas. Traveling east on CA-58, at about 7:45 PM, I saw a full moon on the horizon six-times larger and brighter than normal due to it’s position relative to the Sun and Earth.

It was framed by two foothills, and appeared to be massive! Where was my camera? In the closet at home, at the last moment of packing I put it away thinking. “I won’t have time to use it”. Big mistake!

Thanks for sharing this photo! I just Tweeted about your blog site.

I’m the same way. every time I go somewhere and think “Oh I wont need it” I end up regretting not bringing my camera with me. I try to bring a camera every where i go even if its my iPhone lol

Can you edit this post? You spelled Brennan’s name wrong.
I’m sorry, I’m just being a bossy older sister.

There Chantel, fixed his name. Hopefully he isn’t upset about the missing N ;)

Not bringing a camera = always a disappointment. It’s the curse of SLRs! They’re so great but they’re so big and bulky. I wonder if one day there will be a fantastic DSLR that is the size of a tennis ball and even better than what we have now :)
