After work, Robyn and I decided that we should go out and enjoy the sun so her recommendation was to head over to Spanish Banks. Spanish Banks is located in the lovely area of Kitsilano, just a little south from UBC. It is also part of the stretch of beach which is also home to Jericho and Kits beach.

Every time that I have done to Spanish Banks the tide has always been in (or high), but today we made sure to look over the tide charts to see if the tide was out (low). It was, and Robyn was excited.

I’ve never seen Spanish Banks at low tide and it was really cool. You can walk out for like 20 minutes onto the sandy flats. Robyn was happy to bring out Smooth Sailing, her kite. I on the other hand noticed many Bald Eagles circling as well as Great Blue Herons in the surf. I hoped to capture something cool with my camera, whether or not it was the Herons or the Eagles feeding. I was in luck.

I won’t go into the photos I took of an Adult Bald Eagle snatching a fish from a Great Blue Heron, but I will show the photos of my closest encounter with a Bald Eagle, it also happened to be a Juvenile Bald Eagle too!

In the last photo, he was eventually chased off by an Adult Bald Eagle. I assume the Adult was telling the Juvenile: WTF, why are you letting a human get so close? I was about 20 feet away at one point.

Times like this I wish I could afford the Canon EF 300mm f2.8 IS or even the Canon EF 400mm f4 IS lens. The EF 2.0X extender would have been pretty cool too! I think I’m pretty lucky to get so close to such an amazing prediator and hope I can get as close to another one again!

The above photos, as well as the other eagle photos on my Flickr photostream, where all shot with my Canon XSi and the EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS combo. Every day I use the lens, I am glad I purchased it even if it was quite expensive.
